Wichita's Season of Nonviolence is an extension of the global event which occurs between January 30, Gandhi's death, and April 4, MLK's death. This is a time dedicated to thinking of living nonviolently through our thoughts and actions.
Description
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE: To provide a series of events between the anniversaries of the assassinations of Mohandas Gandhi and
Martin Luther King, Jr. to educate, inspire and empower people to respond peacefully to the wide variety of ways violence pervades our society. The ultimate goal is that everyone come to the table and be included in the discussion and then go forward affirming and empowering... each other and to live as the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights charges us to live in the world. (From the Preamble of the U. N. Declaration of Human Rights: Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world…)
The Season of Nonviolence is a global event which occurs between Gandhi's and MLK's death anniversaries. It is a time of year in which we are encouraged to study, learn, and engage in leading our lives as these two wise leaders did.
The event in Wichita for 2014 is a brainstorm and vision that was developed through my classes at Kansas State University towards by Certificate in Nonviolence Studies.
2014 will hopefully be the first of many years of celebrating the Season of Nonviolence as a community.
